Protective Coatings: Innovations You Need to Know

Protective coatings play a crucial role in safeguarding a wide range of surfaces against corrosion, abrasion and other forms of wear and tear. These coatings not only help extend the life of assets but also ensure that they remain in good condition and continue to operate at optimal efficiency. Over the years, there have been many innovations in protective coatings. In this article, the experts at Wagon Paints will explore some of the latest developments that you need to know about.

Antifouling coatings

Antifouling coatings are designed to prevent the build-up of marine organisms such as barnacles, algae and other sea creatures on the hulls of ships and other marine structures. They work by releasing toxic substances that deter the growth of these organisms, keeping the surface clean and free from damage. Optima Antifouling 2.32 is a tin-free self-erodible antifouling coating pigmented with cuprous oxide for the protection against fouling for drydocking service intervals up to 18 months, occasionally up to 24 months, depending on area and conditions.

Heat-resistant coatings

Heat-resistant coatings are designed to prevent the spread of flames in the event of a fire. They contain special chemicals that react when exposed to heat, forming a protective layer that helps to slow down or prevent the spread of flames. Thermosil HR is a modified silicone formula coating with heat resistance to 500°C. Ideal for use on wood heaters, BBQs and engine exhausts, Thermosil HR comes in matt black finish and can be applied directly to bare metal. Available in 4L and 20L pack sizes.

UV-resistant coatings

Rhicryl is a decorative solvent-based acrylic copolymer sealer which can be applied to most concrete surfaces in both vehicular and pedestrian traffic areas. Available in a range of colours in low to full gloss, Rhicryl provides a durable film for protection of stamped, stencilled, coloured and plain concrete surfaces.

Hybrid coatings

Hybrid coatings combine the benefits of different types of coatings to provide enhanced protection. For example, a hybrid coating may combine the anti-corrosion properties of an epoxy coating with the abrasion resistance of a polyurethane coating, creating a highly effective protective layer that can withstand a wide range of environmental conditions. IPS Hybrid is a two component, ambient curing, epoxy-polysiloxane micaceous iron oxide pigmented anti-corrosion primer. It provides outstanding resistance to corrosion, chemical, mechanical and tough environmental conditions. IPS Hybrid serves as an ideal primer or intermediate coating for IPS 100 finish coat. It comes in metallic light and dark greys.

Thermal insulation coatings

Thermal insulation coatings are extremely durable, resistant to high temperatures and provide excellent protection against abrasion and corrosion. They are commonly used in high-performance applications such as aerospace, automotive and military industries.

Thermaguard TIC 180

Thermaguard TIC 180 is a high performance, water based, single component, ceramic filled acrylic, Thermal Insulation Coating (TIC). It provides seamless water resistant insulation film which can improve energy efficiency, prevent Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI), reduce condensation build up and provide personal protection according to ISO 13732-1 (SafeTouch™ properties).

Thermaguard TIC 400

Thermaguard TIC 400 is recent technology. It is a water based, single component, ambient curing, ultra-high-build inorganic polymeric siloxane matrix, Thermal Insulation Coating (TIC) for elevated temperatures. Thermaguard TIC 400 provides a seamless, hydrophobic, weather resistant insulation film, with operating temperatures from -60 to 400ºC. The coating acts as a thermal barrier which can improve energy efficiency, prevent Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI), reduce condensation build up and provide personal protection according to ISO 13732-1 (SafeTouch™ properties). Thermaguard TIC 400 protects interior temperatures against cold, warm and humid weather conditions.

Chemical-resistant coatings

Transozinc Silicate 1.52 is a self-curing ethyl silicate with a high zinc content for an excellent protection of steel structures against corrosion in industrial and marine environments. Transpoxy Glascote 4.40 is a 2-pack high solids glass-flake epoxy coating with outstanding chemical and abrasion resistance. It is ideal for areas facing severe corrosive conditions such as in splash zone areas.
