Coating failures on transport assets and industrial machinery rarely come down to
poor application. In most cases, the root cause is misspecification — a product
chosen for convenience or familiarity rather than matched to the substrate condition,
service environment, and performance requirements of the asset. Recoating a
fleet of trailers or a piece of heavy plant is expensive, disruptive and avoidable.
Getting the specification right at the outset is always the more cost-effective path.
This guide walks through the key technical variables that should drive coating
system selection for transport vehicles, trailers, agricultural machinery and general

Understanding the Coating System: Primer, Intermediate, Topcoat
A coating system is not a single product. It is a sequence of layers, each performing
a distinct protective or functional role, and the compatibility between those layers is
as important as the performance of any individual product.
The primer layer is responsible for adhesion to the substrate and, in anti-corrosive
systems, for delivering active corrosion inhibition. The intermediate or mid-coat,
where used, builds film thickness and acts as a barrier layer. The topcoat delivers
the finish appearance, UV stability, chemical resistance and mechanical protection
against abrasion, impact and wash-down.
Specifying these layers independently and confirming inter-coat compatibility before
application is fundamental to achieving the system’s intended service life. Using
products from a single manufacturer’s range simplifies this process considerably.
Substrate Assessment: Where Every Specification Starts
The substrate type and its condition at the time of coating are the two most influential
factors in product selection. No primer or topcoat will compensate for inadequate
surface preparation, but the right primer selection can make a significant difference
in adhesion performance and long-term corrosion resistance.
Bare mild steel is the most common substrate in transport fabrication and industrial
machinery. For structural steel components, trailers, chassis and general fabrication,
a single pack zinc phosphate primer provides active corrosion inhibition and forms a

Where higher levels of corrosion protection are required — particularly in coastal,

primers offer substantially better barrier performance. These build thicker dry film thickness (DFT) per coat and provide a more robust foundation for harsher environments.
Galvanised steel requires specific attention. The zinc surface that gives galvanised
steel its corrosion protection is chemically passive, which means it resists bonding
with most conventional primers. Adhesion failures on galvanised substrates are
common and almost always preventable. Etch primers that mechanically and
chemically key into the zinc surface are the appropriate starting point. Wagon Paints’

primer or direct topcoat may be appropriate. Where the existing coating is failing,
lifting or contaminated, full removal back to the substrate is the correct approach.
Aluminium is increasingly present in transport construction — particularly in tipper
bodies, tankers and light trailers — and has its own adhesion requirements.
Aluminium does not rust in the conventional sense but is susceptible to galvanic
corrosion where it contacts ferrous metals, and it requires an etch primer or “whip
blasting” before conventional single & two pack systems are applied.
Surface Preparation: The Variable That Determines System Longevity
No coating system performs to its specification on a poorly prepared surface. For
industrial and transport applications, the key preparation requirements are:
Abrasive blasting to Sa 2.5 (near-white metal) is the ideal standard for new steel
being coated in a controlled environment. It removes mill scale, rust and
contaminants, and creates the surface profile that anti-corrosive primers require to
achieve full adhesion and barrier performance.
Where blasting is not practical — site maintenance, existing equipment, or budget
constraints — power tool cleaning to St 3 standard is the minimum acceptable
surface preparation. Hand tool cleaning alone will not achieve adequate adhesion
with most industrial-grade primer systems.
Solvent wipe-down to remove oils, release agents and contamination is required on
all substrates before priming, regardless of how clean the surface appears visually.
Topcoat Selection: Matching Product Chemistry to Service Conditions
Once the primer system is established, topcoat selection comes down to the specific
performance demands of the service environment.
Two-pack polyurethane topcoats remain the benchmark for high-gloss, high-
durability transport finishes. They offer excellent UV stability, colour and gloss
retention, resistance to chemical splash, fuel and wash-down, and good abrasion
resistance — all properties that matter for over-the-road vehicles and plant operating

For applications where a direct-to-metal approach is appropriate on clean, sound
metal surfaces — reducing system complexity and application time — the 2K DTM
Plus two-pack acrylic polyurethane offers strong performance without the
requirement for a separate primer step in some situations. It bonds directly to
prepared steel and delivers corrosion protection, UV stability and a quality finish in
fewer coats.
Single-pack alkyd enamel topcoats remain relevant in lower-demand applications
where budget and simplicity are priorities. They are suited to light industrial
equipment, farm machinery and general fabrication that will not be exposed to harsh
chemicals or constant weathering. They are not appropriate for applications requiring
high UV stability, chemical resistance or long-term gloss retention without regular
maintenance.
Hammertone finishes serve a functional as well as decorative role. The textured
surface of a hammertone coating is less susceptible to showing minor surface
imperfections, handling marks and mechanical scuffs than a high-gloss finish —
which makes it a practical choice for equipment that will be regularly handled, loaded

Environmental and Regulatory Considerations for Coating Selection
Coating specification for transport and machinery applications increasingly intersect

environmental considerations.
Two-pack polyurethane coatings based on isocyanate hardeners deliver excellent
film performance but carry well-documented health risks during mixing and
application. Isocyanates are a recognised cause of occupational asthma and
sensitisation — and once a worker becomes sensitised, ongoing exposure must be
eliminated. Managing isocyanate exposure requires supplied-air respirators,
appropriate application environments and rigorous handling procedures, which
creates real operational complexity for field maintenance and workshop applications.
Where these controls cannot be reliably maintained, or where site requirements
restrict the use of isocyanate-containing products, ISO-free topcoat systems are the
appropriate alternative. Modern ISO-free two-pack acrylic topcoats — such as

integrity and durability to traditional polyurethanes without the isocyanate

reducible enamel systems offer a lower-impact alternative for light to medium-duty

dry times of 45 to 60 minutes and making them a viable alternative in production and
maintenance workflows.
Colour Matching and Transport Consistency
